Cirebon was founded by Sunan Gunung Jati in the 1500s. This ancient city has 2 beautiful kratons, distinctive batiks and is famed for its seafood.

The Kraton Kesepuhan was completed in 1527 and is restored. The architecture is unmistakably Javanese but makes strong use of Dutch blue tiles, French crystal and Chinese porcelain motifs. Multi lingual guides take you through the Kraton. The highlight is the Kereta Singa Barong. It is a 300-year-old golden gilded chariot. A winged mythical beast, Singa Barong is part Taoist dragon, Hindu elephant and Lion.

Kraton Kanoman was built in 1588 and is obviously the poorer cousin of Kesepuhan. It contains its own version of the Kreta Singa Barong and has its own collection of antique Dutch plates.

Pasar Kanoman is a vibrant morning market. 4 km away is the bizarre Gua Sunyaragi grottos that were the water palace of the Cirebon Sultans. It is full of local children climbing through tunnels and caverns.
